2016 AGM Recap
Date of Event East Belmont Cricket Club : Sat Aug 6, 2016 8:10PM

On July 11th, the club held its Annual General Meeting for 2016 at the Winter Reserve clubrooms. Following the reading of apologies, outgoing president Jim Timberlake (who indicated that he would not be standing for re-election after two years in the top job) and treasurer Paul Brennan gave a brief recap of their president’s and treasurer’s reports respectively.

In summary, 2015/16 was another underwhelming season by our own lofty standards, and despite an inaugural 8th XI premiership and yet another GCA T20 crown, there was an overriding feeling of disappointment with our 1sts and 3rds falling at the final hurdle. We do remain well poised however, with a strong playing group, and the appointment of a new coach in Chris Williams, to target a more successful on-field campaign in 2016/17.

From an off-field point of view, we remain in a position of strength, and Jim’s two years as president has laid the groundwork for some very exciting times ahead for the club, with the recent announcement of $580,000 of federal funding towards the redevelopment of our clubrooms, and the details of a major strategic partnership with AWA Alliance Bank soon to be announced.

Financially, the club returned a healthy result in 2015/16, attaining a moderate profit, which slightly exceeded our projections for the year. This was in large part due to another highly successful Bunnings sausage sizzle during the off-season, not to mention our inaugural comedy night at The Ponds, which was an absolute smash hit, and highly likely to return again this season. While it is not the overall objective of a grassroots sporting club to make a profit, the fact that we have managed to do so is a testament to the sound administrative and financial management of the club, and leaves us well positioned to respond to the unique challenges of a changing off-field landscape in the years ahead.

Following Jim’s vacation of the president’s chair for the final time, both senior vice-president Troy Smith (who also indicated that he would be stepping down from the executive committee this season) and secretary Graeme Scannell paid tribute to Jim’s achievements in his two years at the helm. As previously alluded to, Jim has played a significant role in setting in motion some very exciting developments which will play out over the next few years, and the level of passion, commitment and dedication displayed throughout his presidency have been abundantly clear for all to see. Despite a distinct lack of the sort of on-field success to which we have become accustomed, there can be no doubting that Jim leaves the club in a stronger position than that which it occupied when he assumed the presidency. The entire club extends a heartfelt thanks to Jim for his considerable efforts, and look forward to his continued contributions to the club both on and off the field.

Nominations were then thrown open for all positions of the executive committee, with the first and foremost item on the agenda being the election of a new president. It is our very great pleasure to announce that club legend and former president from 2002-07 Gerry Wakefield was elected unopposed to the presidency, and will assume the reigns for the coming season. A tireless servant of the club with over 25 years of experience on the committee, Gerry’s standing at the club is absolutely without question, and it will undoubtedly be of immense benefit to have an experienced hand such as Gerry at the helm during the period of change that lies ahead for the club.

With the club also in need of a new senior vice-president, we are excited to announce that outgoing senior coach and EBCC life member Peter Quick has been elected to the role, and will no doubt continue to provide exceptional leadership to the club, albeit in a new capacity. We thank Troy Smith for his outstanding efforts in the role, and wish him the best as he seeks to devote more time to his growing family, with a young son and wife Liz currently pregnant with baby number two.

Tom Scannell, Graeme Scannell, Steve Eggleton and Paul Brennan were all re-elected to the positions of junior vice-president, secretary, assistant secretary and treasurer respectively, rounding out the list of major club office bearers. With the bulk of last year’s general committee also returning, it is clear that we have an experienced and highly capable group of volunteer administrators in charge of running the club, and we should all have confidence that the fortunes of the club are in very safe hands for the foreseeable future.

The new GCA season is not far away, and as always, we can’t wait to meet it. Bring on 2016/17, and with it, an exciting new era for the East Belmont Cricket Club!

Go Lions!
