ALP Matches Coalition Funding Commitment for Winter Reserve Redevelopment
Date of Event East Belmont Cricket Club : Wed Jun 29, 2016 8:18PM

An absolutely fantastic result for the club with the announcement yesterday from the Labor candidate for Corangamite Libby Coker that a federal Labor government will match the $580,000 of funding already committed by Sarah Henderson and the coalition for the Winter Reserve clubrooms redevelopment.

What this effectively means is that irrespective of the outcome of this Saturday's federal election, we have a guaranteed commitment of funding towards our much needed and long overdue major redevelopment. This is absolutely sensational news for the club, and something which we can all be very, very excited about.

Given that the club had formally endorsed Sarah Henderson and the coalition government for re-election following their initial (at the time unmatched) funding announcement, it is necessary for the club to clarify its position in light of this latest announcement by Libby Coker and the ALP:

The East Belmont Cricket Club is an apolitical entity by default, and only offers its formal endorsement to a particular political candidate or party in those rare instances where it is clearly and materially in the club's own interests to do so. Given that both major parties have now made identical funding commitments to the proposed redevelopment, the club hereby withdraws its formal support of the Liberal party in favour of a neutral position. The club no longer has any vested interest in the outcome of the election, and we encourage our members to cast their vote on Saturday according to whatever criteria they see fit.

With that being said, the executive committee feels it is appropriate to acknowledge the significant efforts of Sarah Henderson in bringing about the initial $580,000 commitment by the coalition. Without the hard work and organisation of Sarah over the course of this election campaign, it is unlikely a funding promise would have been obtained from either party, let alone the bipartisan commitment which we are extremely fortunate to have now secured. We extend our sincere gratitude to both candidates and their parties, but formally acknowledge Sarah Henderson's efforts for having brought the redevelopment project one very significant step closer to reality.

Whatever the result of the election this weekend, this is undoubtedly a brilliant outcome for East Belmont, and something for the entire club to celebrate. The redevelopment project is vitally important to the long term future of the club, and the significant improvement to the standard of our facilities will allow us to continue to compete at the forefront of Geelong cricket for many years to come. It is a very exciting time for the club, and we can't wait to get started on bringing the project even closer to fruition.

Go Lions!
